The Associate Planner is a journey-level, professional position that serves as a supporting member of the public-facing customer service team. Individuals in this position perform work of moderate difficulty in professional municipal planning, by assisting applicants and the public in applying planning and zoning regulations and City policies to development projects, plans, and technical issues, and by verifying compliance with city, state, and federal regulations, policies, and procedures. This position may perform a variety of routine administrative and technical tasks to support the land use, permitting, business licensing and code enforcement functions of the organization. The position is responsible for providing timely, courteous, and effective technical assistance to internal and external customers.

Working with the public is a primary job function which requires strong customer service and computer software experience. This position requires the ability to multi-task while in a fast-paced environment where interruptions are frequent. A significant amount of time is devoted to facilitating land use, construction permit and license application review, assisting internal and external customers, ensuring compliance with legal deadlines and processing requirements, and supporting administration of the City’s GIS and permitting software systems. This position may be asked to perform senior-level professional duties of limited complexity and may occasionally need to attend evening meetings. This position may serve as back up for front counter staff.
