The Westbrook Police Department values every officer and is committed to investing in career development. We’ll work with you to create a career path to attain your professional goals. We know that our profession is a demanding one and we’re dedicated to supporting our officers on and off duty. At Westbrook PD you’re not just a call taker. Our patrol officers are encouraged to follow up on their own cases and we afford them discretion to manage their proactive activities during uncommitted time. The City of Westbrook is growing by leaps and bounds. We want team players who are passionate about the law enforcement profession and have the skills and abilities to solve complex problems.

Our department of 45 sworn officers serves and protects a growing population of roughly 20,000 residents. Adjacent to the City of Portland, and within a 2-hour drive from Boston or Bangor, our department handles a steady volume of calls for service and self-initiated activity.   Combined, officers field nearly 35,000 calls for service annually. Our department is committed to proactive law enforcement. We’re also a community policing oriented department, encouraging officers to be self-motivated, work with citizens to problem solve, and be active in the community.

Westbrook PD has a culture of teamwork, service and cooperation. We have solid leadership, department stability, and a great reputation in the region. We have great community support in what is one of the fastest growing cities in the State of Maine.

If you feel stifled, micro-managed, over worked, and/or unsupported in your current situation, we encourage you to check us out. The grass is greener at Westbrook PD. We have over a dozen officers who have made the move and will attest.

DO YOU VALUE QUALITY TIME OFF? our officers work 4 days a week, 10-hour shifts. That means 3 days off every week! Officers are assigned to a permanent shift, so you don't have to worry about changing hours or shifts. And - you get Friday, Saturday and Sunday off 6 months a year - unheard of in law enforcement!

EXCELLENT BENEFITS PACKAGE: we offer a 20-year, no age pension with annual cost of living adjustments through the Maine Public Retirement System; highly competitive salaries and steps (new contract with significant wage increases); specialty, educational, military (including reserves and National Guard), foreign language, and physical fitness stipends; generous vacation (up to 5.5 weeks) and sick leave accruals (120 hours per year) and cash in; low employee contributions (lowest in the area) to health and dental care;

BENEFITS OF TRANSFERRING TO WESTBROOK PD: Transfer candidates will be placed on the contractual salary and vacation leave scale at the rate equal to their years of full-time law enforcement experience. Many departments put a cap on years of service. We don’t. Successful candidates who are academy graduates with 5 years of full-time law enforcement experience or out of state lateral hires (no 5 yr. service requirement) receive a $14,000.00 hiring incentive, paid out in two installments: $7,000 upon final job offer and $7,000 upon successful completion of the one-year probationary period.

OPPORTUNITIES AT THE WESTBROOK POLICE DEPARTMENT: Career development opportunities are available through specialty assignments (Detective, State Drug Task Force Agent, Domestic Violence Investigator, FBI Task Force Officer, School Resource Officer, K-9 Officer, Regional Special Response Team Operator, Peer Support Team, Crisis Negotiator, Motor Officer, Summer Bike Patrol, Traffic Unit, Honor Guard, Crash Reconstructionist, Drone Pilot) and promotional opportunities.  Our training program is progressive, with many opportunities in-house, regionally, and nationwide.  There is ample opportunity for overtime, with numerous patrol shifts, outside details, and events.

SELECTION PROCESS: Resume submission, interview, physical agility test, background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam, and medical exam.

All applicants who are not currently a full-time certified officer must take and pass the Alert test, and they must submit the Alert test with their resume and cover letter.  Please note that out-of-state candidates are not required to have taken the Alert test when submitting their resume and cover letter, but as part of the hiring process they will be required to take and pass it.  To find out dates to take the test and to register, please visit the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s website at https://www.maine.gov/dps/mcja/.

PHYSICAL FITNESS STANDARDS: To be a police officer you must be physically fit.  Part of our hiring process is that you must take and pass the Academy’s physical fitness test before we proceed with a interview.  Please go to the Academy’s website - https://www.maine.gov/dps/mcja/ - to register, or contact us to schedule a test with us.

Lateral candidates - your physical fitness standards will be different, as you will not need to attend the Academy.  Please contact us to learn what your standards would be.  You would not need to take a test prior to an interview, but would need to take it as part of the hiring process.

If you are interested in applying, please submit a resume and cover letter to:
