Police Officer

The Lago Vista Police Officer is responsible for enforcing laws & ordinances, protecting life & property, preserving the peace, apprehending criminals and investigate traffic accidents within the City of Lago Vista jurisdiction. Through the use of the Police Dispatch system, the Police Officer responds to calls including, but are not limited to animal nuisance, vandalism, natural/ suspicious deaths, traffic enforcement, and Texas Penal Code enforcement.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Individual duties, assignments and responsibilities required of the position)

  • Prepare and complete required written police reports in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the safety of the public and its citizens.
  • Represent the City of Lago Vista and the Police Department in a professional manner.
  • Patrol assigned geographical zones and respond to emergency and non-emergency service calls.
  • Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Conduct criminal investigations and lawful arrests.
  • Apprehending and transporting suspects.
  • Produce writing citations.
  • Deliver warrants.
  • Appear in court when needed.
  • Attend continuing education classes.
  • Investigate all types of offenses including, but not limited to domestic violence, animal abuse, traffic violations, and other illegal activities.
  • Obtain, process, log and maintain evidence to include physical and digital evidence technology.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (special training, certifications, college degree, etc.)

  • Must be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D.
  • Must be a current certified Texas Peace Officer

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and a citizen of the United States.
  • Must not have had a license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) denied by final order or revoked or have a voluntary surrender of license currently in effect.
  • Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle & must possess at a minimum, a Class “C” valid driver's license, which is not under suspension or revocation; an occupational license is not acceptable.
  • Be mentally & physically able to drive safely.
  • Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
  • Must not have been convicted of, or placed on deferred adjudication, probation, community supervision, community service, or pre-trial diversion for driving while intoxicated, or DUI, within the past ten years.
  • Must be able to perform the essential duties & functions of a Police Officer as determined by a physician, including, but not limited to the following:
    • Show no trace of drug dependency or illegal drug use after a physical examination, blood test or other medical test.
    • Must be able to pass psychological examination.
    • Must be able to pass physical examination.
    • Normal Hearing
    • Normal vision no worse than 20/100 uncorrected in each eye, corrected to 20/20 in each eye.
    • Must have normal color vision.
    • Must submit a Form DD 214-4 to verify honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions from the military (if applicable). Must be discharged from active duty before the start date of employment with the Lago Vista Police Department.
    • Must be of good moral character.
    • Willing to submit to a thorough, comprehensive background investigation & be interviewed, prior to appointment.
  • Must not have ever been or currently on court-ordered community supervision or probation, or deferred adjudication, or pretrial diversion of any offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor.
  • Must not have ever been or currently on court-ordered community supervision or probation, or deferred adjudication, or pretrial diversion of any offense for a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years.
  • Must not have ever been convicted of any family violence offense.
  • Must not have ever been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor.
  • Must not have ever been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years.
  • Must not be under any indictment for any criminal offense.
  • Must not have ever executed at any time a confession to a felony offense, such confession being admissible as evidence against the person in any criminal proceeding in any state or federal court.
  • Must not have used marijuana within (2) years preceding the date of application or during the hiring process.
  • Must not have illegally used any illegal drug, inhalant or controlled substance, other than marijuana, within ten (10) years preceding the date of application or during the hiring process.
  • Must not have furnished marijuana to another within the ten (10) years preceding the date of application or during the hiring process.
  • Must not have ever furnished, any illegal drug or controlled substance, other than marijuana.
  • Must not have ever engaged in the manufacture or sale of any drug listed in the Texas Controlled Substance Act.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (technical, communication, interpersonal, etc.)

  • Ability to competently read & write the English language.
  • Ability to work long hours, including 12+ hour shifts.
  • Ability to keep composure during physical, emotional, and stressful situations.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to animals and the risk of being bit or possibly attacked.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Salary: $62,004 annually

Position is a Regular Full-time position eligible for all City benefits.
