Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Planning Director, the Planner is responsible for processing and reviewing applications for Plats, Development Plans, Site Plans, SUPs, zoning verification letters, variance applications, zoning and ordinance amendments and other current planning applications as received by the City.  The Planner position provides support to the Development Review Committee (DRC), Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Sign Board of Appeals. This position conducts research, surveys and analyses on Planning and Development issues and prepares reports accordingly. The primary role of this position is to deliver a high level of customer service in personal interaction with property owners, businesses, and potential applicants, customers, both internal and external.

Examples of Duties

 

  1. Under the supervision of the Planning Director, assist with the execution and quality of day-to-day functions of the Planning and Development Department.
  2. Provide effective and competent communication and implementation of the City’s policies related to zoning, signs, subdivisions and the Comprehensive Plan. 
  3. Provide effective and competent communication in the application of the municipality’s long range plans, special districts and also applicable State and Federal regulations. 
  4. Provide effective and competent communication on procedural requirements and recommendations to applicants through the development process.
  5. Assist with the overall coordination and communication between the Development Review Committee and other applicable organizations. 
  6. Perform, and or oversee quality assurance reviews for development applications intake and assist with project distribution.
  7. As case manager, analyze and evaluate basic development proposals and offer recommendations for the Planning & Zoning Commission and City Council.
  8. Attend public meetings and provide clear and concise presentations to the Zoning Board of Adjustments, Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
  9. Assist in identifying the need and execution of amendments to relevant codes, ordinances, procedures and policies. 
  10. With limited oversight conduct, building and sign permit, site visit, and final Certificate of Occupancy reviews for development sites.
  11. Participate in special team projects both within and between departments.
  12. Provide assistance and administrative support to the Planning Technician.
  13. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.  

 

Typical Qualifications

Proficiency in the use of a computer and Microsoft Office Applications.  Working knowledge of principles, concepts, and theories of urban planning. Strong analytical and research ability. Strong customer service skills.  Ability to understand maps and related graphics.  Skill to utilize a variety of advisory and design data and information, such as zoning and subdivision codes, planning maps, state statutes and city ordinances. Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply the procedures and standards of applicable codes and ordinances.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, or closely related field. Minimum of two years’ experience in any municipality working as a Planner. Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning or Urban Planning may substitute for experience. Valid Texas Drivers’ License with an acceptable driving record.

 

Salary: $49,920 - $54,000
