Description

The City of Portland is looking for an Assistant City Manager to join its executive team and support the City Manager in running Maine’s largest and most complex municipality. This position will share responsibility with the City Manager and other Assistant City Manager in overseeing the City’s more than fourteen departments and offices; assist with special projects; participate in the creation and implementation of the annual budget; liaise with the Mayor and City Councilors and other internal and external partners; and fill in for the City Manager in her absence.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess a thorough knowledge of modern developments in the field of local government. They are innovative, thrive on challenges, demonstrate enthusiasm for the work, and have a high level of compassion and a desire to serve the community. With a significant degree of professionalism and proven leadership abilities, they effectively motivate and manage people and projects, even with limited resources. They are highly collaborative and are able to bring together various stakeholders, both internal and external to achieve group goals. Their exceptional ability to manage all aspects of municipal budgets allows them to seek additional resources to maximize their impact.

The right candidate will have significant local government leadership experience, including as a town or city manager, assistant city manager, or department head or other leadership role with significant responsibility. Non-Union position – Grade E92 - The starting salary range is $142,348 - $165,017 annually depending on skills and experience, and the full salary range is up to $180,351. The City of Portland prides itself on its outstanding benefits, and collegial and mission-driven work environment.
