  • Are you experienced in public land corner restoration?
  • Are you knowledgeable in preparing survey documents, including drawings, maps, and legal descriptions?
  • Are you a skilled researcher with strong investigative techniques, able to locate, compile and organize complex and outdated survey data?
  • Do you thrive working in a team environment and are invested in team success?
  • Do you have exceptional skills in building partnerships through a commitment to providing excellent customer service?
  • Do you have a personal commitment to putting ethics into action by holding yourself to the highest standards of professionalism, honesty, and objectivity?

If you answered “yes” to the questions above, we want you to join our team as a Land Surveyor at the Clackamas County Surveyor's Office. If selected for this position, you will be responsible for providing professional expertise and assistance with survey activities, including maintaining public records, restoring government corners, completing USBT map surveys, monumental recovery and boundary surveys, and providing technical support to the public.

This is a great opportunity for a self-motivated individual, who loves the outdoors! In this role, while you will be mostly working out in the field, you will also have a chance to balance it out with some office work. If you are out in the field, you will be involved in physically demanding work required for the boundary surveys, corner monument restorations and construction surveys.

If you are working in the office, you will be doing extensive research on the corner history, starting from around 1860’s to the present time. This position will allow you to demonstrate your investigative skills in evaluating corners in the field as well as your writing skills to prepare narratives and historic descriptions for USBT corner records in the office. You will also be responsible for writing reports on how the corner was verified or set, based on the evidence found in the field. Another critical component of this position will be preparing a sketch and history for each land corner that will be used for drafting the USBT map.

The main focus of the position is to have the land corner accepted by the County Surveyor in a group meeting in order to evaluate where the corner should be set. Additionally, you will be involved in doing reviews of the drafted map, making any necessary edits, and collaborating with another land surveyor on the team in the public land corner division for a comprehensive review. Once all edits to the USBT map are complete, you will seek the County Surveyor's feedback and comments before the final map is filed. Consequently, you will be successful in this position, if you thrive working in a team environment.

We are committed to being an exemplary organization with best practices in Land Surveying. To that end, we are searching for an experienced individual, who is motivated to contribute to the team's success in providing excellent customer service in maintaining the original Government Land Corners, maintaining a library of property survey records for Clackamas County, reviewing all surveys for compliance with Oregon Survey filing law, and reviewing and approving plats of all land divisions and property line adjustments in Clackamas County.

Required Minimum Qualifications/Transferrable Skills:

  • Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in any state (U.S.) at time of hire. Selected candidate must become registered as a PLS in the State of Oregon within six (6) months of hire.
  • Experience applying knowledge of federal or state statutes and other rules and regulations governing land surveying principles, practices, methods, standards, and record keeping
  • Experience in public land corner restoration • CAD experience
  • Experience conducting research pertaining to survey and related property records
  • Experience locating, compiling, and organizing complex and historical survey data
  • Experience providing excellent customer service to the public as well as to other stakeholders, such as the engineers, private surveyors, developers, and construction contractors
  • Strong interpersonal skills (for a complete list of required skills, please review the job posting)
  • Must pass a post-offer physical assessment; accommodation requests will be reviewed on an individual basis in compliance with State and Federal legislation
  • Driving is required on a regular basis or to accomplish work. Incumbents must possess a valid driver's license, and possess and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout the course of employment.

Preferred Special Qualifications/Transferrable Skills:

  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) registration in the State of Oregon
  • Experience preparing plats and records of survey according to statutes, County Code, OAR, and standards of practice as a Land Surveyor
  • Professional technical report writing experience
  • Supervisory or lead work experience
