City of Canyon Fire Chief

The Department

The City of Canyon Fire Department is a combination department and it responded to approximately 1100 calls in 2019, including structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, grass fires, medical emergencies, and non-emergency calls.  The Canyon Fire Department consists of the Fire Chief, four full-time personnel, a Records Clerk, five compensated maintenance volunteers, and volunteers.  The City of Canyon has an ISO rating of 2 and is active in the community through various outreach programs and services.  The current fiscal year budget is $1,018,082.  The Canyon Fire Department has an excellent reputation in the community and with surrounding entities.

Fire Chief Position Summary

As a member of the City Manager’s administrative team, the Fire Chief is responsible for the daily operations of the fire department which includes, fire suppression, rescue operations, prevention, inspections and training.  The position requires an ability to work effectively with career and volunteer personnel, elected officials, outside agencies, and all other city departments.  Administrative duties include planning, directing and controlling departmental activities, purchase of equipment, control of expenditures and preparing estimates for an annual budget. 

Education and Experience

Required qualifications include:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.;
  • Ten years of firefighting experience with a minimum of five years in a supervisory/management  capacity;

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in fire science, fire administration, public administration or a related field;
  • Experience with recruiting, selection, training, and financial aspects of operating a fire department;
  • Experience working with a volunteer or combination fire department;
  • Extensive first-hand experience in emergency operations, fire prevention, safety and education.

Certifications and Licenses

Required:

  • Valid Texas Class A driver’s license or ability to obtain within six months of hire;
  • TCFP – Advanced Structure Firefighter, Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I, Basic Fire Inspector, Basic Wildfire Firefighter;
  • TCFP – Head of Department (Suppression) eligible for certification at time of appointment or eligible to be certified within (1) one year of appointment as defined by the TCFP Standards;
  • Texas Department of State Health Services – Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Certification (EMT-B);
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800.

Preferred:

  • TCFP – Driver-Operator, Fire Investigator, Incident Safety Officer, Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer II, Plan Examiner.

Compensation and Benefits

The City of Canyon offers a competitive salary range of $75,000 to $100,000 depending on qualifications and experience.  The City participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) at 7% employee deposit rate with a municipal matching ratio of 2:1.  Canyon’s generous benefits program includes health, dental, vision, life insurance, paid vacation, and sick leave.  Canyon participates in the Social Security System.  Canyon offers its residents a superb quality of life and working conditions.  Residency within city limits is strongly preferred.
