Description

Planning Manager, City of Franklin, Wisconsin (pop. 36,295). The Planning Manager oversees the City’s planning department, facilitating and managing all community planning and zoning activities of the City.  Department staff expedites development proposals through the review process and coordinates with other City departments whose service delivery to the public may be affected by such development. 

The Planning Manager, along with the planning department’s staff, is also responsible for providing development-related staff support to the Mayor and Common Council and are primary liaisons to the Plan Commission, the Quarry Monitoring Committee, the Board of Zoning and Building Appeals, the Environmental Commission, and the Parks Commission. The Planning Manager manages a staff of three and a budget of about $440,000. The position reports to the Mayor, who is also Chair of the Plan Commission. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Be forward-thinking and an exceptional communicator;
  • Possess an ability to work with a variety of stakeholders including City officials and staff, developers, real estate agents and property owners and residents;  
  • Possess a passion for public service and an ability to find a way “to get it done”; and
  • Be able to thoughtfully represent the interests of the city with a high level of community engagement.


Candidates should also have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, community development or related field. AICP certification and/or an M.A. in urban planning, community development, architecture or related field is ideal.
  • Four - ten years of service in a municipal planning role or similar setting, including at least one year of supervisory experience in a full-time, planning department; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


Starting salary: $83,000 – 87,000 +/- DOQ, plus competitive benefits.
