This is a unique opportunity for an inquisitive self-motivated, and creative individual to make a positive impact on Sarasota County. Sarasota County Government is seeking an intern in the General Services / Facilities department.

Facilities is comprised of an Operations, Maintenance and Planning work groups, it is responsible for the care of 414 buildings and sites ranging from a 10 story office towers to park and beach structures providing space planning, interior design, daily operational and maintenance services to all building services, systems and elements. Among a multitude of disciplines and services the Facilities is responsible for is landscape and irrigation systems for 28 County buildings from managing term contracts and contractor ensuring adequate care and service is provided. The division will design, plan major renovations to existing landscapes as well as review new building landscape and irrigation design plans for County compliance and offering recommendations.

 

Intern Responsibilities:

  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
  • Participation in organized intern events.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking a graduate (post-baccalaureate) degree or senior level graduate studies. (Proof of current enrollment required at time of application.)  May consider recent graduate of master's program.
 

Job Duties:

  • Performs administrative work such as the posting of detailed records, proofreads typed materials, and generates reports.
  • Makes calls and interact with departments. May survey residents and convey helpful information.
  • Assist with, learn from contract management and other department relations
  • Performs other duties as requested.

  • Sufficient personal initiative, confidence and responsibility to own a project and its success.
  • Energy and tenacity to stick at the project and always find a path forward to complete it.
  • Temperament to learn--changing behavior whenever something could be done better.
  • Ability to read and follow protocols of project management.
  • Effective communication skills--both writing and speaking.
  • Ability to engage and gain value from those who can help during the project and in using its findings.

Desired Skill Set:

  • learning and obtaining an education and understanding of commercial landscaping, grounds maintenance, plant material application, Arboriculture, turf management, IPM and/or irrigation maintenance/installation
  • customer service skills
  • ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing 
  • flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced atmosphere
  • along with creative problem-solving skills.

 

Ideal competencies for this position include but are not limited to: 

  • Basic landscape practices, principles knowledge to include maintenance of.
  • Basic plant, tree, palm selection knowledge, types of material used.
  • Basic plant, tree, palm maintenance knowledge.
