This is a unique opportunity for an inquisitive self-motivated individual to make a positive impact on Sarasota County. Sarasota County Government is seeking a Collections intern in the Library and Historical Resources department.

The Collections curator works to preserve and maintain our collections of materials which document Sarasota County’s history. This unpaid internship aims to provide students with a well-rounded collections management experience and offers them an opportunity to learn more about the profession. The internship will provide an experiential learning environment in which to acquire an understanding of the value of archives and the research potential of the collections of Sarasota County Historical Resources. Interns are expected to demonstrate the value of their experience by either a summary report of work, finding aids for collections or reports of research or other written work.

Ideal competencies for this position include but are not limited to: ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
 
 

Intern Responsibilities:

  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
  • Participation in organized intern events.

Job Duties:
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.

  • Assist with collection inventory processes
  • Aids in exhibit preparation and installation
  • Creates finding aids and condition reports
  • Contributes to collection digitization
  • Assists with environmental monitoring.
     

Knowledge, Ability and Skills:

  • Curiosity and interest in history and preservation.
  • Sufficient personal initiative, confidence and responsibility to own a project and its success.
  • Energy and tenacity to stick at the project and always find a path forward to complete it.
  • Temperament to learn--changing behavior whenever something could be done better.
  • Ability to read and follow protocols of project management.
  • Effective communication skills--both writing and speaking.
  • Ability to engage and gain value from those who can help during the project and in using its findings.

Schedule:  Part-time schedule
