Job Title:

Manhole Inspector

Summary:

This position is responsible for performing various manual and semi-skilled tasks of average difficulty inspecting the Utilities Wastewater Collection System.

Under general supervision, the employee exercises minimal initiative and independent judgment in performing assigned tasks. Employee may have to perform tasks of a hazardous nature. Position operates electronic locators, brush removal equipment, maintains truck inventory, safe work area, and enters information into City database with portable and desktop PC’s.

When able – unblocks/remove debris from wastewater lines using grabber rod; interacts with utility customers both internal and external.  Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observations and reviewing work orders.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs manual and semi-skilled labor tasks related to the inspection General assessment of the sewer gravity system
  • Locates utilities on the job
  • Digs out utilities manually
  • Performs simple measurements
  • Interprets meter readings
  • Performs routine safety inspections
  • Receives parts and materials from warehouse personnel
  • Interacts with utility customers
  • Transports materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites
  • Sets up and removes warning signs and traffic control devices
  • Operates the following: 
    • electronic utility locators, SL-Rat, small hand and power tools, gas monitors, and computer systems
  • Based on a checklist, maintains utility vehicles in clean, good operating condition
  • Maintains truck inventory
  • Maintains clean and safe work area
  • Performs related work as required

  • Proper safety practices, proper use of hand signals for equipment operations, gas monitoring equipment, pipe sizes and materials, confined space, gravity sewer systems, personnel computer, basic computer software, and communications equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years construction and/or utility experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Meet City Driver’s Requirements

Salary:

  • $31,200
