Job Title:

Labor Crew Chief II (Weekends)

Summary:

The Labor Crew Chief II is responsible for supervising Utilities Technicians and teams, performing lead and skilled to semi-skilled tasks of above average difficulty in construction, maintenance and repair in the Utilities water distribution and wastewater collection systems. 

Under occasional supervision, the employee exercises moderate and considerable initiative and independent judgment in performing assigned tasks.  Some jobs might require the employee to perform tasks of a hazardous nature. 

Hours: Friday through Monday; 7:00am to 5:30pm

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads & supervises utility technicians on jobsite
  • Performs lead / skilled / semi-skilled tasks related to construction & repair
  • Maintenance of wastewater collection & water distribution systems
  • Repairs sewer & water main lines / water services / water valves / fire hydrants / relines or replaces damaged manholes
  • Installs manholes / house connections / trench boxes
  • Checks elevations for proper grade
  • Installs proper trenching & shoring
  • Excavates areas to proper elevation
  • Restores area to previous condition
  • Remediates spills / locates infrastructures / gathers data & information / completes work orders / maintains records & prepares report / assists in planning job
  • Functions in leadership & supervisory role onsite
  • Serves as competent person on jobsite
  • Estimates material / labor / equipment requirements for daily tasks
  • Acquires necessary equipment & materials needed daily
  • Conducts & documents job safety requirements
  • Utilizes the following: 
    • hand & power tools
    • forklifts
    • backhoes
    • flatbeds
    • front end loaders
    • dump trucks
    • street saws
    • Ram X
    • TV camera
  • Respond to customer issues
  • Coaches & motivates crew members by communicating needs / expectations through proper training
  • Helps to develop skills improvement plan for employees not meeting standards
  • Completes performance appraisals & addresses personnel issues
  • Ability to work overtime / various shift hours / emergencies and on-call
  • Performs related work as required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Valves / proper safety practices / bypass pump installation
  • Emergency response procedures & proper internal / external contacts

  • Understand / follow oral & written instructions / read & interpret topo & street maps
  • Drive & work safely / perform work requiring physical strength / work in confined spaces

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL – with tanker endorsement)
  • Ability to obtain minimum Grade I Wastewater Collection or Grade C Water Distribution
  • Completion of three Skills Matrix Leadership & Development courses within one year of promotion / hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College coursework / related certifications /  completion of leadership courses

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED with five (5) years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

Salary:

  • $41,945 - $52,431; Commensurate with Experience
