Description | POLICE LIEUTENANT SUMMARY Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates the staff and activities of a division within a police department as directed by the Chief of Police or designee.
**This position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individual(s) assigned to this position. Supervisory ResponsibilitiesManages assigned subordinate supervisors who supervise sworn and civilian employees in the Police Department. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING (Certification/Licensure): The preferred way to obtain the minimum knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position are listed below. The city reserves the right to allow substitutions in the event a candidate or incumbent exceeds requirements in one area but may be deficient in another. Education and/or ExperiencePreferred: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or technical school; or 10 to 20 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Required: Associates degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or four to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Texas Class “C" Driver's License Advance Peace Officer Certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is mostly in an office setting with occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
