POLICE CHIEF
SHELDON, IOWA

The City of Sheldon, Iowa, (Population 5,188+) is seeking candidates for the position of Chief of Police.  This Senior Management Position leads the activities of the police department and reports to the City Manager. The current chief is retiring after 30 years of service with the department and 16 ½ years as Chief of Police. Sheldon is a diverse and thriving community, located in northwest Iowa’s O’Brien & Sioux Counties, approximately 59 miles northeast of Sioux City and 68 miles southeast of Sioux Falls. Sheldon is home to Northwest Iowa Community College, with approximately 1,500 students on campus.

Education:
     Graduation from a college or university with an Associate’s degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or a closely related field is preferred. College credits shall be from an institution of higher learning which is accredited and recognized by a nationally recognized accredited association. A combination of education, training and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience:
     Minimum of five (5) years of experience in police operations, including at least two (2) years of law enforcement supervisory experience is preferred.

Cognitive Demands:
     Must have strong communication and public relations skills. Ability to show and demonstrate effective leadership capabilities.

Certification:
     Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and meet the licensing standards established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy www.state.ia.us/ilea. The successful candidate must pass a physical examination, psychological examination, drug screen and credit check.

Salary range and benefits:
     The Police Chief is a non-bargaining unit position. The City offers an attractive salary and benefit package. Salary range is $69,000 - $77,000, dependent on candidate’s experience and past job history. Paid vacation, sick leave, personal leave, holidays, Iowa Public Employees Retirement System (IPERS), and group health/life and disability insurance.

Residency:
     Must live within 2 miles of the city limits within six months of hire.
