Canyon, Texas, is situated in the Texas Panhandle, just 14 miles south of Amarillo, and serves as the Randall County seat.  With a population estimated at 16,733, Canyon is a thriving community.  Canyon is the home of West Texas A&M University and serves at the gateway to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. The Canyon Police Department is an organization comprised of an authorized staff of 26 sworn Officers and three full-time civilian employees.  The department has an operating budget of $2.79 million.  The department offers traditional law enforcement services to the Canyon community, based upon the Texas Police Chiefs Association Best Practice Program.  

The City of Canyon is currently looking for a charismatic, experienced law enforcement professional with exceptional interpersonal skills to be the next Police Chief.  The ideal candidate is committed, decisive, service-oriented, and enthusiastic.  The chosen candidate will lead the department with integrity, vision, consistency, and honesty.  Canyon is looking for a seasoned professional who will understand the dynamics of providing police service for a thriving community in the Panhandle of Texas.  

Under the general direction of the City Manager, the Police Chief supervises the planning, operations and administration of law enforcement, and provides the overall direction for the police officer staff and administrative employees. The successful candidate will:

  • Hold an Associate's degree or preferably a bachelor's and master's degree in criminal justice, public administration, political science or related field
  • Hold TCOLE Advanced Peace Officer certification and preferably Master's level
  • Possess a minimum of ten years law enforcement experience with at least five years at the command level preferred
  • Hold a valid Texas drivers's license
  • Preferably be a graduate of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership Command College or similar academy
  • Possess experience as a police chief or assistant police chief
  • Be familiar with the Texas Panhandle region

The City of Canyon offers a competitive benefits package and participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System.  The salary range is from $95,000 to $115,000 commensurate with experience.
