Description

GENERAL PURPOSE:  Under direct supervision, performs a variety of clerical and technical functions in support of New Braunfels Public Library operations; staffs the Service, Children’s, and/or Help Desk; shelves and maintains library materials; provides customer service to patrons; and maintains the Library’s facilities.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

 

  • Assists in providing for the delivery of high quality library services to the public.
  • Staffs the Help Desk and assists patrons in the use of public computers, online catalogs, library databases and mobile devices. Assists patrons with reader’s advisory inquiries.
  • Performs a variety of circulation duties including answering incoming calls, responding to patron inquiries, checking books in and out, issuing library cards, and collecting library fees and fines and assists patrons in locating library materials.
  • Answers reference questions or refers reference inquiries to the Librarian on duty as appropriate.
  • Checks in, sorts, processes and shelves new, existing, and/or donated library materials.
  • Evaluates and recommends library items for repair and/or replacement and assists with same tasks.
  • Participates in opening and closing duties.
  • Provides assistance in coordinating and implementing library programs/events as required.
  • Compiles data and prepares/generates a variety of statistical library reports as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

    Two (2) years of college, and two (2) years public library/customer service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

     

    Required Knowledge of:

  • Public library operations and services.
  • Circulation and reference principles.
  • Collection maintenance processes.
  • Library computer systems, software, and databases.
  • Excellent customer service standards and protocol.
  • Popular author and reading materials for children and adults.

    Required Skill in:

  • Performing a variety of clerical and technical library duties.
  • Assisting in ensuring the delivery of high quality library services to patrons.
  • Staffing the Circulation/Reference Desk and providing assistance to patrons.
  • Preparing library correspondence and maintaining accurate patron records.
  • Processing and maintaining assigned library materials.
  • Providing excellent customer service to the public in a library setting.

     

    Computer Skills required:

  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite 2010, email, web browsing/searching, printing/scanning/copying
  • Basic skills using mobile, smartphone and tablet devices
  • Troubleshooting/problem solving skills

     

    Additional skills and abilities:

  • This position requires strong interpersonal skills, particularly tact and courtesy in dealing with the public and coworkers, a working knowledge of general office procedures, the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, flexibility in work schedule, a good sense of humor and a positive work attitude.

     

    Physical Demands / Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed in an office environment and is subject to sitting, standing, bending, walking, kneeling and reaching for extended periods of time. 
  • Must be able to safely pull or push loaded book carts; and safely lift and carry items weighing up to forty (40) pounds. 
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.

Starting minimum salary range is $12.80 - $15.36 per hour based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include Texas Municipal Retirement System; paid vacation and sick leave accrual. EOE
