Safety Advisor (Official Job Title: Business Professional II):  This is professional level work implementing and coordinating the County’s comprehensive Safety Program.

**Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.

Duties:

  • Functions as advisor to County management and staff regarding safety and health issues.
  • In conjunction with the Risk Manager, ensures compliance with State and Federal safety and health rules, regulations, standards and procedures.
  • Develops and implements relevant safety and health policies.
  • Exercises authority to shut down operations in the event of imminent danger to employees, citizens, or equipment.  Reports non-compliance orally to the immediate supervisor and in writing to the applicable managers for appropriate action and Risk Manager for information.
  • Along with Risk Manager, Safety Advisor serves as Safety Officer during Emergency Operations Center activation in response to any emergency event.
  • Conducts training of pertinent departmental employees in safety related regulations to ensure proper training of employees, proper storage of materials, adequacy of fire protection and disposal of hazardous waste in compliance with County, State and Federal regulations.
  • Conducts safety inspections of county equipment and facilities for the purpose of identifying unsafe acts and conditions that could result in accidents and injuries.
  • Receives all accident and personal injury reports from county employees.   Reviews the reports to ensure the adequacy of investigations and corrective actions.  Coordinates the reports, as necessary, with appropriate management for corrective action, if necessary and the Risk Manager for information.  Investigates department-related vehicle accidents and personal injuries, as necessary.
  • Assists the Risk Manager in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the workers' compensation program, including oversight of third-party administrator, weekly funding requests, attendance at meetings and, when necessary, mediations.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Occupational Safety & Health, Public or Business Administration, Management or job-related field and two (2) years job-related experience - OR -  Six (6) years professional job-related experience can be substituted at management discretion for the required education - OR - Related professional program/project management may substitute for the required education at management discretion.

Preferred Qualifications:  OSHA general industry Certification, or similar accredited safety industry certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of employment.
