Description

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator ("A", "B", "C" or Trainee) (2 Positions):  Operate and maintain mechanical and electrical equipment and analytical instruments in connection with the operation of wastewater treatment plant facilities.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug-screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years .

Duties:

  • Collect, record and interpret data for completion and utilization of operation and maintenance records as directed.  Collect samples and perform laboratory analyses and adjust plant operations in accordance with standard operating procedures and operating protocols. Monitor SCADA system and respond to alarms and abnormal readings and trends in accordance with standard operating procedures and operating protocols.  Perform daily operation of pumps, motors, valves and other treatment plant equipment as directed so that the plant will operate within the parameters of its operating permit and specific rules established by the applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on pumps, motors, valves and other treatment plant equipment as directed by Chief Operator. Perform maintenance and housekeeping duties on plant grounds and facilities as directed by Chief Operator. Complete work orders and record details of maintenance performed on the Maximo work order system.
  • Perform additional duties  as directed by the Chief Treatment Plant Operator and respond to emergency operational requirements as needed. Complete FEMA and safety training as directed by the Chief Treatment Plant Operator.

Perquisites/ Allowances: Uniforms, personal protective equipment including steel toe safety shoes, operator certification renewal reimbursement.

Minimum Qualifications:   Possession of a Class "A", "B" or "C" Water and/or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's License as issued by the State of Florida and required by the position. Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.  Trainee may be considered for this position.  Trainee must obtain Class "C" Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s license within two (2) years.

Preferred Qualifications:   Experience in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants.    Courses in Chemistry, mathematics and electrical mechanical maintenance.  Certifications in: Hazcon, Confined Spaces, hearing Protection, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respirators, Workplace Violence, Lockout/Tagout, Fire Extinguishers, Personal Protections Equipment and Hazardous Waste Operations.

Job Competencies:

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of pumps, motors, controls, instrumentation and water analysis/testing equipment.
  • Knowledge in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants producing potable water.
  • Knowledge of water treatment process control, mathematics, microbiology, chemistry, motor controls and mechanical/electrical troubleshooting.
  • Ability to be a strong team player.

Work Environment:   Works around fumes, airborne particles, toxic and/or caustic chemicals.  There can be risk of electrical shock and exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands:   Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.  **At times may be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
