Position Summary Conducts on-site inspections of new construction and repairs or alterations to existing structures and new businesses for certification of occupancy, meets with contractors regarding proposed structures to insure compliance with zoning and local ordinances, inspects buildings and residences with damage to determine what repairs and permits are needed, and insures that City ordinances are enforced.
Essential Job Functions 1. ADVISES homeowners, and builders on code and ordinance requirements.
2. CHECKS blueprints and plans for conformance to adopted construction regulations.
3. ADVISES property owners and contractors on proper application of building codes.
4. CONDUCTS on-site inspections of new construction, repairs, or alterations to existing structures to ensure compliance with zoning, local ordinances, and all adopted codes.
5. MAINTAINS written inspection records of all construction projects.
6. ATTENDS development meetings and pre-construction conferences as necessary.
7. OPERATES assigned vehicle to/from job locations safely.
8. ARRIVES at work on time and WORKS assigned schedule.
9. PERFORMS other related duties, as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities 1. Ability to work as a positive team member and in accordance with the city’s Code of Ideals.
2. Skills in effective oral and written communication.
3. Skills in maintaining accurate records to prepare concise reports.
4. Knowledge of installation and operation of electrical equipment, good sanitary plumbing procedures, safe air conditioning and mechanical installations, and construction safety rules.
5. Ability to work and communicate effectively with City personnel and the public, especially under stressful conditions.
6. Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders, stoop, twist, bend, and reach to visually examine sites to recognize hazards which may affect the life, health, and safety of the public.
7. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures or inclement weather with some exposure to dust, odor, electrical, mechanical, and toxic hazards using proper safety precautions.
Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalent with five years experience in the field (city building inspection, plans examination, commercial construction, or related field) or any combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. A valid appropriate State of Texas Driver’s License with a good driving record and Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners Plumbing Inspector License are required. Current ICC Certification in the fields of Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Residential and Commercial Energy preferred, or ability to obtain within one year of date of hire in position.
