Brief Job Summary:  Directs the overall health activities of the department, and serves as a heath authority to protect the public health as mandated by law to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases.   Occasionally serves as a physician for one or more public health programs.

Job Essentials:

• Plans the direction of physician services with regards to policy and procedures; and works closely with the organizations, institutions, agencies, individuals and news media as assigned, with respect to appropriate release of health related information.
• Serves as an official of the state in relation to state laws and regulatory agencies.
• Serves as a physician for one or more public health programs.
• Supervises physicians and serves as a Deputy Public Health Authority. 
• Controls the spread of communicable diseases in the community through use of quarantine, if necessary.
• Reviews and authorizes Medicaid/Medicare reimbursements.

Job Requirement:

MD/DO from an accredited college or university. Five (5) years of work related experience as a licensed physician. Board Certification in a primary care specialty required. 

Preference will be considered for candidates with a medical degree AND Masters of Public Health (MPH) Degree.     

Must possess license to practice medicine in the State of Texas. Experience in Public Health Administration, including laws covering Public Health practice preferred.  Knowledge of standard software applications.  Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public. Previous community health/communicable disease and/or infectious disease experience necessary.  Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License, with good driving record. Standard office environment.  Ability to travel to various work site locations.  Exposure to blood and various illnesses, diseases and other health problems.
