Skilled Trades Worker I - Streets/Landscape/R&B:  The position involves skilled work in moderately complex construction, maintenance and repair of county roadways, right-of-ways and facilities throughout Sarasota County as directed by the Manager.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.

Duties:

Depending on the needs of the organization and the unit assigned to, this position may be required to perform tasks in the following skilled areas:

  • Performs repair and installation of concrete sidewalks, curb & gutter, driveways and handicap ramps.  Constructs complex forming projects utilizing wood and metal products while maintaining and setting to proper grade.  Performs drainage pipe installation, builds custom concrete catch basins, headwalls and spillways.
  • Performs asphalt repair and maintenance on county roadways.  Includes operation of tools and equipment associated with road repair and modifications, road cuts, and pothole repair. All work is done to Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications.  Duties include setting up the required Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) for safety, flagging per MOT standards, performing labor intensive tasks associated with shoveling, spreading, and compacting asphalt.
  • Conducts labor tasks to keep roadways and rights-of-way clear of obstructions.  Includes removing debris and hazards from roadways.  i.e., (construction debris and dead animal carcass).  Conducts manual trimming of trees for proper clearance and site distance problems, using chainsaws, weed eaters, pole saws, and manual tools associated.  Makes repairs to roadway edge of pavement drop-offs.  Assist in the re-grading of county non-maintained roadways.
  • Operates specialized equipment;  Dump trucks, backhoes, small excavators, skid loaders, front end loaders and other related equipment required to maintain and repair road rights-of-ways and stormwater systems.
  • Maintains equipment and vehicles as assigned.  
  • Responds to customer complaints relating to road right of way issues, including ADA complaints, asphalt repair complaints, line of site problems and road way blockage concerns.
  • Completes and submits work orders relating to all work performed in a professional and timely fashion.
  • Responds to emergency situations as required.

Minimum Qualifications:  A High School Diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of vehicle and pedestrian travel way systems and /or road right-of-way areas.  Experience in operating equipment used for concrete and asphalt maintenance and repairs in and around road right-of-ways.  A Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "B" with tanker endorsement is required within six (6) months from date of hire. A valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment.

Job Competencies:  Knowledge of current technology in road right-of-way maintenance practices.   Knowledge of safe operation of specialized tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of road right-of-way. Operation of front end loader, dump truck, excavators, personal computers and mechanical tools used in the road maintenance industry.  The ability to understand and follow oral/written instructions.

 

Work Hours:   6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  40 hours per week.  On-call is required.    Occasional weekend work may be required. 

Physical Demands: Must frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. **May be required to lift and move concrete bags weighing 60 pounds.
