GENERAL SUMMARY

Salary:  $61,068.80 - $76,336.00 Annually (Depending on qualifications)

To plan, organize and execute historical preservation programs for the City, including carrying out the functions of the Historic Preservation Ordinance; coordinate facility usage; negotiate contracts and agreements with groups and organizations; cross-coordinate programs and projects with the Downtown Manager; promote the historical preservation programs to various agencies, groups, and individuals; publish and distribute promotional materials; and supervision of employees.

SUPERVISION
 
General supervision is provided by the Director of Community Development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct & Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
  2. Manage operation of historic preservation/structures; oversee activities of buildings and grounds; ensure maintenance and upkeep is properly conducted; contract of appropriate entities and restorative/preservative work needed.
  3. Carry out the essential functions of the Historic Preservation Ordinance, including oversight of the Landmark Commission and local marker program.
  4. Coordinate volunteer activities; schedule volunteers to conduct tours of premises; trains volunteers regarding tour presentation and method; act as staff to volunteer board.
  5. Manage and participate in the development and administration of the historical preservation budget; forecast the funds needed for staffing, equipment materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments as necessary; prepare and present budget recommendations and financial reports.
  6. Serve as liaison to other groups and present historical preservation interests of the City to external bodies such as the Chamber of Commerce, Civic Clubs and other organizations; Drive to and from destinations as necessary .
  7. Generate funding through a variety of sources; seek funding through available grants and major contributors; coordinate membership drives; maintain membership listing, prepare and send annual membership dues statements; develop promotional materials; arrange for publication of information in the media.
  8. Perform research on site/structure to obtain historical information regarding the site/structure; study books, documents, and other materials to discern the history of the site/structure; document history for use in presentations, tours, and brochures.
  9. Coordinate facility usage; maintain schedule of events; execute contracts with interested parties; collect admission and special event fees; maintain records of receipts, expenses, and numbers of persons served; arrange for refreshments, entertainment and decorations for special events; coordinate fundraising events.
  10. Research and apply for state historical markers as well as assist on National Register nominations.
  11. Select appropriate consulting engineers and architects to manage preservation projects and maintenance work.
  12. Coordinate archival storage and conservation of museum pieces.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in Historic Preservation, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Museum Science, History or related field. A Master's degree in historic preservation is a plus.
 
EXPERIENCE

Two years of increasingly responsible experience in historic preservation, urban planning and/or public administration.  A master's degree in Historic Preservation, Urban Planning, Public Administration, or Museum Science may be substituted for experience requirement.
 
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Certification in Historic Preservation or ability to achieve certification in two years, is preferred.

Monday-Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM
