Summary  

This position is responsible for serving as a Building Inspector and be skilled to conduct building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical inspections for both residential and commercial construction projects. This position is also responsible for serving as a Single Family, Multi-Family & Duplex Rental Property Inspector and must be skilled in Section 8 Housing regulations. Available to work after normal business hour and occasional weekends to conduct special inspections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Performs complex inspections on multiple permits on industrial, commercial and residential construction sites to ensure that work performed meets City adopted codes and ordinances.
  • Enforces zoning regulations by inspecting existing buildings and premises for change of use or occupancy, proper use of construction materials, and compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Inspects foundation, structural concrete, steel, masonry, wood construction, framing, plumbing, mechanical and electrical installations.
  • Inspects location of new structures and checks distances between buildings in relation to neighboring structures to ensure compliance with zoning ordinance.
  • Enforces compliance with codes and ordinances including the adopted International Code Conference (ICC) building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, energy, existing building and sign codes and City zoning codes; issues notices for non-compliance and document actions; maintains files and reports for possible legal actions.
  • Responds to complaints of defective workmanship or improper installation; inspects and determines appropriate remedial action to be taken.
  • Confers with architects, contractors, builders and the public in the field and office; explains and interprets code requirements and restrictions.
  • Enters inspection details and related information onto computer system; updates and retrieves information as required.
  • Performs customer service by interacting with customers face-to-face, over the telephone or by email.
  • May assist Combination Inspectors with minor compliance issues and construction projects.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.   

Education and/or Experience  

High School diploma or GED and four years of responsible construction including supervision of construction projects and have the knowledge of residential or commercial construction. Four years of increasing responsible experience in building inspection, or the construction industry.    

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations  

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a State of Texas Plumbing Inspectors License and ICC Certification within one year of employment. A valid Class C driver's license with a clean driving record is required for this position. Driving is a requirement of this position.   

Salary
Staring at $28.22/hourly
