Pretrial Services Caseworker, Intake Unit (Official Job Title: Caseworker II(New FY20 Budgeted Position - Selected candidate will start on or after 10/1):  This is responsible professional work in pretrial investigations, case management and counseling and social service referrals for the Sarasota County Government Pretrial Services Program.
 
Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

Subject to Passing CJIS Background Check:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment FBI Criminal Justice Information Systems background check and security clearance.

 Duties:     

Intake Duties:

  • Conducts defendant interviews with regard to demographics and community ties; verifies defendant information; conducts victim interviews.
  • Conducts mental health and substance abuse assessments; gathers information for those eligible for the specialty courts.
  • Prepares Judges’ reports for purposes of First Appearances; prepares Affidavits for Indigent Status for Public Defender services.
  • Prepares local criminal histories from 12th Judicial Circuit Clerk of Court and jail system programs; prepares Florida and National criminal histories from FDLE/JIS system/CCIS.
  • Compiles, organizes and maintains records of daily productivity.
  • Prepares and processes a variety of forms and documentation (i.e. Rules and Regulations contracts; warrants, case management documentation).
  • Keep updates, trained and utilizes CE Pretrial-Automon case management system.
  • Review Rules and Regulation contracts, First Appearance Advisory Forms and completed investigation reports to ensure accuracy.
  • Screens for release under Delegated Authority.   

Court Hearings:

  • Attends First Appearance hearings and other court sessions to provide information to the court.
  • Advises defendants of conditions of court order and restrictions of assigned program.
  • Instructs clients on matters pertaining to the conditions of pretrial release and the criteria and requirements of specified programs such as Drug Court, DUI Court and Health Care Court.
  • Functions as the Clerk of Court during weekend First Appearance hearings. 

Special Projects:

  • Performs a variety of special studies.
  • Prepare spreadsheets and track program data as necessary for judiciary i.e., Delegated Authority, CTC, EMIR, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:  A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in criminal justice, counseling, social or behavioral science or a related field.  Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required college degree.  

Hours:  Pretrial Services is a 24/7 operation (including weekends and holidays).  The current shifts are:  6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. (rotates every other week - 4 day week to 3 day week)   Applicants must be flexible with ability to work shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned.

Job Based Competencies:  Communicate well verbally and in writing; Foster teamwork, accuracy, high professional standards, reliability and consistent growth within the local criminal justice system; Must obtain certification by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) as a Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center (FCIC/NCIC) operator within six (6) months of appointment; Keep CJIS Certification current.
