CIVIL ENGINEER DESCRIPTION AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The purpose of this position is to design, review and manage public works infrastructure and public improvement projects, perform advanced public works engineering duties, provide solutions for problems, and address citizen concerns. This is accomplished by reviewing plans and specifications; designing infrastructure improvement, expansion, construction or relocation projects; developing plans and specifications; project management; coordinating with developers, contractors, consultants, the public and other departments; and responding to inquiries. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of the City Engineer. Prepare plans, specifications, and estimate package by performing the essential functions printed below.

  • Attends and monitors updates by participating in regular project update meetings, taking calls from citizens, engineers, architects, contractors and developers, referring questions, and monitoring ongoing projects.
  • Completes design and review by reviewing projects, checking details and layout, verifying ordinance compliance, reviewing proposals for solutions, coordinating efforts with related areas, estimating quantities and costs, preparing estimates, verifying submitted bids, and responding to related citizen inquiries. 
  • Assists other engineers with projects and related assignments. 
  • Manages construction projects by soliciting construction bids, facilitating pre-bid conferences, verifying calculations, finalizing recommendations, processing contract documents, issuing notices, monitoring project progress, recommending payments, and closing out projects.
  • Reviews plans by reviewing requirements, issuing comments, monitoring progress of construction, and recommending acceptance.
  • Manages projects by soliciting construction bids, facilitating pre-bid conferences, verifying calculations, finalizing recommendations, processing contract documents, issuing notices, monitoring project progress, recommending payments, and closing out projects.

Must be licensed by the State of Texas as a Professional Engineer within twelve (12) months from the date of hire or promotion as a condition of employment. All applicants are encouraged to apply.

CIVIL ENGINEER IN TRAINING (EIT) DESCRIPTION AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The purpose of this position is to evaluate and recommend changes, review and manage infrastructure and public improvement projects, provide engineering solutions for problems, and to address citizen concerns. This is accomplished by reviewing plans and specifications, designing solutions, expansion, construction or relocation projects, coordinating with developers, contractors, consultants, the public and departments, developing plans and specifications, reviewing proposals and plan documents, coordinating inspections, and responding to inquiries under the direction of the City Engineer. Other duties include assisting the public with maps and questions, and completing related administrative assignments and tasks.

  • Prepare plans, specifications and estimates for Public Works Infrastructure Improvements under the direction of the City Engineer.
  • Manages construction projects by soliciting construction bids, facilitating pre-bid conferences, verifying calculations, finalizing recommendations, processing contract documents, issuing notices, monitoring project progress, recommending payments, and closing out projects.
  • Assist other engineers with projects and related assignments
  • Participates in regular project update meetings, taking calls from citizens, engineers, architects, contractors and developers, recommend solutions, and monitoring ongoing projects.

Must be certified as an Engineer-In-Training by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers within six (6) months of the date of hire as a condition of employment.

Position may be filled as staff Civil Engineer for applicants with Public Works experience or as a Civil Engineer in Training.

SALARY AND COMPENSATION INFORMATION

On-site employee clinic, Wellness Center, Wellness Incentive Program - STEPS, 11 paid Holidays, TMRS Retirement 2:1, two voluntary 457 plans, Vacation 0-4 years/13 days, 5-9 years/15 days, 10-14 years/17 days, and 15+ years/20 days with a max of 280 hours carry over, Sick is accrued at 4.62 hours per pay cycle for a total of 15 days per year with a max 720 hours, life insurance, supplemental life insurances (for yourself and family members) and a variety of other insurance options, bereavement leave, military leave, civic duty leave, tuition assistance, and a City Employee Credit Union and what we are most proud of our EMPLOYEE FAMILY.
