Description

 

Regulate, direct, and control pedestrians at a designated school crossing while children are going to and from school by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection.  Crossing guards are not to engage in traffic direction or control.
 
Hours: Work morning and afternoon shift (approximately two hours per day), Monday through Friday, during the public school year (August through May).  Specific hours to be worked will be set by the traffic sergeant and may vary according to demand and workload.
 

 

 Principal Duties:
  • Guide and direct pedestrians and school children through busy intersections and designated school crossings utilizing issued safety gear and hand motions to ensure pedestrian safety.
  • Watch for gaps in traffic and walk children across the roadway or intersection while holding a "stop" sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching vehicles.
  • Remain standing at the school crossing in full view of passing traffic for a specified period of time.
  • Remain alert for possible safety concerns at school crossing. Reports emergencies, equipment defects, and traffic dangers.

 

 Qualifications:
Required:    Must not currently be or have been within the last ten (10) years on court-ordered community   supervision or probation for any criminal offense of the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or above. 
May not have been convicted of an offense of the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or above within the last ten (10) years.
May not have been, at any time, convicted of a felony offense or any family violence offense.
Must be able to handle the stress of working in a high traffic environment.
Must be able to work with school age children.

Work is performed outside in all weather conditions and requires sufficient physical strength, agility and dexterity to perform all essential tasks. Duties require walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, standing, sitting, lifting and carrying light objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work exposes employee to dangerous, hazardous, and potentially life-threatening situations. Knowledge of all appropriate precautions, procedures and techniques is an absolute requirement.
