Animal Control Clerk

SummaryResponsible for funds, routine office work and dispatching duties at Animal Control Shelter.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Receives and logs daily calls, dispatches requests for animal control assistance to animal control units.
  • Handles and routes office walk-in traffic; maintains count of all incoming calls and walk-ins.
  • Processes adoption and reclaims requests as needed.
  • Maintains kennel records of each animal brought to the shelter.
  • Responsible to coordinate with Kennel Attendants and place Shelter Pets on websites every week.
  • Responsible to coordinate with Police Records Division for destruction of Shelter records.
  • Responsible for Spay and Neuter Contracts. Fill out and mail certified letters of warnings out to Citizens that not complied with the city contract.
  • Prepare monthly reports.
  • Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; perfoms other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED  required. Minimum of six (6) months experience in a job requiring heavy public contact in a busy office environment or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to read, write and understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to perform routing mathematical computations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner by telephone and in person in dealing with and responding to irate citizens, co-workers, Supervisors and the general public.
  • Basic Computer Skills.

License and certification requirements: A valid Texas Driver's License is required.

Skills Test:  Typing test with a passing score of 25wpm with 7 or less errors.
