The City of Mont Belvieu, Texas is currently accepting applications for a Building Official in the Community Development Department.  The City of Mont Belvieu is a growing community located on IH-10 east of Houston, Texas in Chambers County.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for inspecting commercial and residential buildings and food establishments for compliance with city, building and health codes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Make visual inspections during building and site construction to insure compliance with city ordinances and building codes.

• Interprets and explains City codes and code enforcement rules, policies and procedures to property owners and the general public.

• Review commercial and residential building plans for code compliance. Issue building permits.

• Keep records of inspections and permits issued.

• Coaches and supervises building inspectors and permit technicians.

• Patrols City to check for code violations and monitor high-risk areas.  

• Investigate complaints of building and health code violations.

• Issue health permits.

• Issue citations when required for noncompliance with city codes.

• Responds to complaints of potential code violations relating to environmental and safety controls, signs, hazards, drainage, permits, land use, zoning dumping, polluting, and other nuisances and code related matters

• Attend city council meetings, when asked, to advise council on issues regarding subdivision plats or other related items.

• Engage in and complete special assignments in the following areas:

  • Drainage

  • Compliance with residential ordinances

  • Land development, land use, and construction

• Be thoroughly conversant with the subdivision ordinance and provide ordinance interpretation, as requested.

• During emergency conditions, all City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.

• Performs any and all other related duties or assignments as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• This position supervises building inspectors and permit technicians and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within the department.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

• Five (5) years of related municipal experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and related field experience.

• State Code Enforcement Officer Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

• Texas State Plumbing Inspector’s License.

• ICC Certification as a Plans Examiner, Combination Commercial or Residential Inspector.

• Must possess a valid Texas Driver License.

• Successful candidates must undergo pre-employment drug screen and job related physical.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Certified Building Official preferred
