Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Summary: Under basic supervision, assists the Golf Course Superintendent with supervising staff and maintenance and repair projects at the Ratliff Ranch Golf Links for the Parks and Recreation (P&R) Department.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Assists with managing the maintenance and repair of golf course, facilities, and equipment.
  • Supervises work crews, monitors operations, and verifies the efficient and timely accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities; trains staff and helps employees to correct performance deficiencies.
  • Verifies work is performed in compliance with P&R Department policies and procedures, safety and quality standards, and state and federal regulations.
  • Inspects jobsites to assure work quality and effective use of resources; investigates accidents and equipment failures.
  • Inspects golf course, identifies opportunities to improve the golf course.
  • Maintains inventory of chemicals, including pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, and fertilizers; applies chemicals, maintains OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), assures safe handling of chemicals, and trains staff in proper handling and storage procedures.
  • Evaluates golf course turf conditions, and adjusts irrigation system to optimize playing conditions.
  • Maintains records and logs of services performed and general maintenance information.
  • Performs work of grounds maintenance worker as needed to meet workload demands; performs specialized technical duties according to area of assignment.
  • Cross-trains work crews in standard work methods and safety procedures.
  • Promotes and enforces safety rules and regulations.
  • Represents and acts as Golf Course Superintendent, in his absence.
  • Must have and maintain a cell phone for City use to hold this position.
  • Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School diploma or GED required; AND two year's golf course maintenance experience. Must be enrolled in the GCSAA or actively pursuing membership into the GCSAA within 3 years of hire date.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods used in maintenance of golf course grounds and facilities.
  • Operation, maintenance, and repair standards for specialized golf course equipment and vehicles.
  • Techniques of turf maintenance.
  • Irrigation equipment, water management systems, irrigation repair and sprinkler control devices.
  • Proper use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
  • Federal, state, and City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.

Skill in: 

  • Supervising staff, delegating tasks and authority, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Managing turf, and identifying plants, pests, diseases, and unsafe conditions.
  • Managing work sites, and establishing effective safety zones.
  • Using specialized tools and heavy motorized equipment to perform maintenance and repair work.
  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.

License and certification requirements: A Texas State Driver's license is required. Pesticide Applicator license from the Texas Department of Agriculture is required or ability to obtain within (1) year.

 

Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed on the golf course and in an office environment; incumbent required to work with pesticides, herbicides, and other hazardous chemicals. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
