Lenexa, Kansas, is located in Johnson County and lies within 200 miles of the geographic center of the United States in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Lenexa is an attractive and safe city with a strong sense of community and is the fastest growing city in the state of Kansas. The City of Lenexa Governing Body is comprised of a mayor elected at-large and eight City Council members. The Governing Body appoints the City Manager who is responsible for implementing Governing Body policies, submitting the annual budget, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of City departments.

The City seeks an ethical leader with strong character who will be invested in the Lenexa community and committed to its success to serve as its new Community Development Director. Under the direction of the City Manager, the Community Development Director manages the Community Development Department and serves on the City Manager’s Management Team. This position oversees five key areas: planning, engineering, building, community standards (codes enforcement), and licensing and permitting. The Department has approximately 50-55 employees, with the Director having four direct reports. 

The selected candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in public administration, urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, or another related field, and have a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in municipal administration, including five years of supervisory experience. A master’s degree in a related field is preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to complete the essential functions of the position will be considered. A valid drivers’ license and residency within the City of Lenexa within six months of hire as described in the City Code are required.

The salary range for this position is $122,000-177,000 annually depending on qualifications and experience.
