ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY

City of Baytown, Texas

The City of Baytown is a full-service municipal government, located along the Gulf Coast region of Texas in Harris and Chambers Counties, and is the “Gateway to the Houston Metropolitan area” from its eastern city and state neighbors.

The City of Baytown has an opening for an Assistant City Attorney. This position assists with legal matters affecting the City, focusing on those pertaining to law enforcement and civil service.  The Assistant City Attorney provides counsel to employees, officers, and various boards and commissions.  At times, the person holding this position will conduct training for the Fire, Police, Health, and Planning and Development Services Departments.   The Assistant City Attorney interfaces with the District Attorneys' Offices and other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.  This position may also prepare and/or review interlocal agreements, contracts, ordinances, etc.                                                                                         

Minimum requirements for this opening include:

  1. Law Degree (Juris Doctorate) from an accredited law school.
  2. Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
  3. Licensed to practice law in the Southern District of Texas (Federal) or submission of Federal admission packet to obtain license within six (6) months of hire.
  4. Three years’ experience in law enforcement or criminal law.
  5. Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred requirements for this opening include:

  1. Previous municipal government experience.
  2. Three years' experience in criminal prosecution.
  3. Experience with civil service law, collective bargaining and meet and confer.
  4. Licensed to practice law in the 5th Circuit.

The City of Baytown offers an excellent benefits package including a voluntary ICMA 457 deferred compensation program, as well as membership in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with a 7% contribution and a 2:1 employer match. The City of Baytown pays all premiums for long-term disability protection and pays the majority portion of the medical premium for employees and dependents.

Salary Range:           $73,588 to $110,382 based upon qualifications
