JOB SUMMARY

To assist in various aspects of the activities of the HEB Teen Court for Juvenile Offenders; and to assist in recruiting, training, and supervising youth and adult volunteers.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assists in the overall activities of the Teen Court Program including pre-court processes, docket and trial scheduling, and recruiting, training and supervising youth and adult volunteers; implement program goals and objectives.
  2. Assists in the implementation of goals, objectives, and modifications to systems.
  3. Assists in Teen Court scheduling, trials and case dispositions to ensure proper court procedure.
  4. Creates and maintains Teen Court defendant records in Access, defendant file folders, letters of notification, and court dockets.
  5. Distributes incoming and outgoing mail.
  6. Answers phone calls in a professional and courteous manner.
  7. Interviews juvenile defendants to determine their eligibility to enter assigned program; refer youth to appropriate resources for counseling in substance abuse, psychological or physical abuse.
  8. Communicates with representatives from other agencies involved in the Teen Court program including court and police agencies, school districts, and county probation services; maintain and monitor community service work site placements.
  9. Assists in monitoring youth and adult volunteers participating in court roles including defense attorneys, prosecutors, and jurors.
  10. Assists in docket scheduling, trials, and case dispositions; notify defendants of trial dates and assigned attorneys; compile data on teen court activities; develop and maintain records and provide periodic reports of teen court activities.
  11. Helps maintain frequent contact with the public, municipal judges, other city departments and outside agencies appointed boards and commissions.
  12. Provides input into the development of assigned program budget: forecast funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; recommend adjustments as necessary and may provide input into the performance evaluations of subordinate personnel.
  13. Attends Teen Court sessions and Teen Court Advisory Board meetings after regular office hours.
  14. Notarizes Teen Court documents.
  15. May perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
  16. Regular and timely attendance is required, as well as, the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner. 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of use and application of computer software relevant to the position, i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Print Artist or other graphic package.  
  • Basic working knowledge of office machinery.  Keyboarding/typing skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma / GED; one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Texas Driver's License. 
Must be Notary Public or be bondable.

Desired: Certification as Deputy Court Clerk

Preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm / Various Mondays 12pm-9pm
