General Statement of Job

The Field Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of equipment for the Road and Bridge Department. Work involves traveling to various locations within the county to diagnose malfunctions in light and heavy equipment and perform necessary repairs in the field. Work also involves removing and replacing or rebuilding worn or broken parts, and maintaining records of work performed. Employee is also responsible for maintaining inventories of tools, replacement parts, and supplies. 

Essential Duties:

Inspects malfunctioning or non-functioning motorized vehicles and equipment; diagnoses need for repair; makes appropriate repairs while on-site or transports to the shop for repair.

Orders parts and inventory as needed; maintains files and records on parts ordered.

Assists other employees with repair and maintenance of equipment as needed.

Performs major and minor engine tune-ups and adjustments; installs rebuilt motors.

Adjusts and makes repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered engines; adjusts valves, carburetors, generators and related units; rebuilds or replaces worn or defective parts.

Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brake, steering, electrical, fuel, cooling, and related systems on light and heavy motorized equipment and vehicles.

Repairs and adjusts hydraulic and vacuum-operated systems; replaces hydraulic motors, hoses and fittings; installs and adjusts power take offs.

Replaces tie rods, springs, and shock absorbers; replaces alternators, regulators, starters, wiring, gauges; rebuilds or adjusts components as required.

Tunes engines by adjusting or replacing needed parts; makes repairs to clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering mechanisms and related units, machines drums and rotors.

Maintains records of service and repair work performed on vehicles; inspects equipment periodically to monitor preventative maintenance being performed by Division personnel, and advises personnel as necessary.

Maintains tool, replacement parts and supply inventories, preparing purchase requisitions as required.

Repairs bodies of motorized equipment, including patching or reshaping dents, and utilizing acetylene torches to cut, fabricate and weld sheet metal; sands and paints repaired body work.

Regular and punctual attendance is required.

Education, Experience, and Licenses

High School diploma or GED and a minimum two years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.

Must possess a Class B Driver’s License issued by the State of Texas.

Must be able to obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with “N” endorsement issued by the State of Texas within six months of employment.
