SUMMARY OF POSITION
 
The purpose of this position is to administer City-wide database systems, including developing, maintaining, implementing, and backing up databases.  The DBA will troubleshoot and resolve database issues related to performance, integrity, replication, backups.  Additionally, the DBA will develop; present, and implement best practices/policies and procedures ensure the security and integrity of all databases.
 

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
 

  • Serves as City-wise database administrator providing technical support for all database environments including spatial databases (ESRI platform).
  • Configures and installs new SQL Servers as well as maintain/upgrade existing database servers.
  • Implements database security, maintenance and back up routines. Establishes user accounts and specifies user access levels.
  • Responsible for creating, implementing, managing, testing and documenting enterprise wide database backup, recovery plans and best practices.
  • Reviews existing databases and optimize for best performance.
  • Responsible for creating, implementing, maintaining, and enforcing standards/procedures on the citywide use of databases and enterprise data to ensure the consistency and maintainability of existing data and applications.
  • Configures SQL monitoring utilities to minimize outages.
  • Troubleshoots database outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends.
  • Determines most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query.
  • Supports city staff by designing, developing, maintaining views, reports, cubes, other business intelligence solutions for complex/multiple databases to provide information in useable format.
  • Researches industry trends, new technologies, innovations, related legislation and present recommendations on best-suited changes and timing to meet the City's objectives.
  • Travels to assigned meetings, presentations, conferences, and other trainings.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND BEHAVIORS

  • Broad knowledge of database administration.
  • Knowledge of database administration, and data warehousing best practices
  • Knowledge of indexes, index management, and statistics.
  • Knowledge of disaster recovery processes.
  • Skill to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents.
  • Skill to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.
  • Skill to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Skill to perform analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties.
  • Ability to exercise independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
  • Ability to focus on achieving goals, including those involving external departments, agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task in a high activity/energy professional environment that includes multiple and concurrent projects and project deadlines, and occasional interruptions and walk-in appointments.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited educational institution in Computer Science, Database Administration, or related field. Minimum of 3-5 years full time hands-on experience supporting databases.  MCDBA certification preferred.  Hands on experience with clustered or mirrored server environments and SAN deployments preferred.
 
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Minimum of 3-5 years full time hands-on experience installing and supporting databases.  MCDBA certification preferred.  Hands on experience with clustered or mirrored server environments and SAN deployments preferred.
  • 2-3 years of SQL Server hands-on experience
  • Worked on load balancing and high-availability

 

Physical Demands/Supplemental

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
 
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (50 pounds).  Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.  Some tasks require visual and sound perception and discrimination and oral communications ability.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
 
There is limited exposure to environmental conditions.
