Description

The Seasonal Construction Inspector is responsible for the inspection of public infrastructure construction projects and for performing/witnessing material testing to determine compliance with the standards and specifications of the City of Lenexa. Prepares and maintains records of each project and the results of materials tested. Assists with land survey, design/drafting, or other construction related assignments as needed. Work is performed with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment with respect to the interpretation and application of standards and specifications in accordance with sound construction/engineering judgment.   

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

· Inspects construction of public infrastructure projects to ensure contractor compliance with approved plans, details and specifications. Drives to job sites for purpose of conducting such inspections.  

· Order and witness soil, asphalt and concrete testing procedures, as required, and continuously monitors for compliance with City of Lenexa standards and specifications throughout the project.  

· Prepares detailed daily reports for construction activity for each project being inspected.  

· Measures and prepares estimates of work performed, for the purpose of determining amounts of payment due to contractors. 

· Maintains up-to-date plans that reflect all changes in the design and, upon completion of the project, produced “as built” plans for the purpose of maintaining accurate records.  

· Performs other related duties as assigned.  

Education, Training, Certification Requirements

Associate degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering Technology or Certified Engineering Technician OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the minimum qualifications for the position.  

Qualifications  

· Minimum of 2 years field inspection/field construction experience. 

· Prior experience as Construction Inspector preferred.  

· Must possess valid driver’s license. 

· Familiarity with the principles and practices of civil engineering.  

· Knowledge of materials testing (soils, asphalt and concrete), governmental standards (federal, state and local). 

· Proficient at reading technical documents such as blueprints, maps, schematic drawings, and technical specifications.  

· Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with subordinates, contractors, and the general public. 

· Ability to make independent decisions in the field with minimal supervision. 

· Familiar with accepted practices for the construction of Public Works projects. 

· Required to adjust hours of work to coincide with the construction season. 

· Ability to maintain productive working relationships with contractors, the public and fellow employees. 

· Ability to adhere to all safety rules, practices and policies; develops and follows safe work habits; alerts supervisor to dangerous or unsafe conditions in the workplace. 

· Prefer LPA Level 2 certification and ACI Concrete Field Tester Certificate  

Starting salary range is $21.17 hour to $25.76 per hour depending on qualifications Seasonal employees are eligible to work up to 1500 hours per year. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of physical, drug screen and background investigation.
