The position pay grade begins at $21.96/hr. or higher depending on qualifications

Job Summary

Manage the operation of the Railroad & Heritage Museum to include exhibits, collection management, educational programs, fundraising, memberships, staff, volunteers and board activities.  Follow all safety policies and other miscellaneous duties.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, and supervise daily operation of Museum including gift shop, admission, exhibits,  collections, facility rentals, fundraising, and educational programming. Performs tasks in these roles when needed, such as running gift shop, giving tours, or installing exhibits.

• Supervise, train, and evaluate staff; plan, prioritize and assign tasks; monitor work and evaluate staff performance; assure that staff maintains safe work space and facility, responds effectively to visitors, and adheres to policies and procedures for efficient and professional operations.  

• Continually develop and improve the permanent exhibits at the museum. Create and manage the Interpretive Plan.  

• Direct and implement policies for the Museum to meet professional standards, such as ethics policy, collections management policy, financial procedures, disaster response plan, etc.

• Develop and manage the museum’s strategic plan and develop overall mission and vision for museum, as well as interpretive planning to include management, marketing and programming.  

• Plan and develop a temporary exhibit calendar. Organize exhibit space, create/mount graphics, edit text and construct exhibits. Research and book traveling exhibits to fit temporary exhibit schedule, including handling budget, contracts, reporting, and shipping. Supervise handling, packing, and installation of exhibits.

• Manage care and use of historic objects to ensure proper handling, display, and storage of Museum collection.  Work with donors to ensure compliance with the Collection Policy. 

• Interface with and support the Temple RRHM Foundation Board.

• Increase museum memberships through recruitment, retention and member engagement. Develop programs specifically for members.  

• Recruit and direct volunteers. Provide training and volunteer appreciation programs. Coordinate monthly meetings with the Board to discuss special projects. 

• Provide customer service to public, visitors, donors, members, volunteers, and board members. Act as spokesman for Museum with press and other departments. Serve on community committees for downtown events and arts / culture promotion.

• Manage budget accounts and procurement for Museum in accordance with City policies; process purchase orders, contracts, single source authorizations, and other purchasing documents.

• Organize and conduct fundraising activities, Family Day events, tours, trips and educational programs to achieve revenue goals.  

• Plan and implement a strategy to increase facility rental revenue to achieve revenue goals. Coordinate rental contracts, billings and execution.

• Interact tactfully and professionally with the public and customers per department customer service standards.  

• Act as liaison between the Museum, the Temple ISD, Temple Chamber of Commerce, Temple EDC, Central Texas Workforce, CentraMod, and Amtrak at the Santa Fe Plaza Campus, as well as the other community groups hosting events on the grounds.  

• Manage marketing of events and exhibits; update website and social media; and, complete graphic design for marketing items, as well as internal signage and exhibits.

• Accept, receive, and / or collect payments. 

• Prepare and / or process purchase orders. 

• Account for inventory/property management. 

• Exercise purchasing authority up to $1,000 without approval from supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Public History, American History, Business Management or related field

Five years experience as a Museum Director or Curator preferred

Valid drivers license
