DEPARTMENT: ENGINEERING

JOB TITLE: CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Assist the County Engineer Department in reviewing subdivision and Mobility construction for compliance with County standards and applicable construction documents; performing field traffic surveys including vehicle and pedestrian counts, and field verification of existing traffic control devices.  May assist in reviewing subdivision plats and site plans for compliance with applicable County regulations.  Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reviews and monitors subdivision and site development and/or construction.  Represents the County Engineering Department at citizen and developer meetings and/or construction projects.  May conduct inspection and administration of County Mobility and Capital Projects.  Reviews independent testing laboratory results.  Assists the engineers with shop drawings and submittal reviews for Construction projects.  May perform field traffic surveys.  Provides technical assistance to surveyor.  Maintains traffic control sign inventory.  Tests, maintains, places and operates traffic counting equipment.  Processes traffic count data.  Cross-train with development and permitting personnel depending on office workload.  Is familiar with County and municipal subdivision regulations and applies knowledge to plat and site plan review.  Interprets laws, rules and policies in the various County regulations regarding subdivisions, site plans easements, road names, addresses and signs.  Informs public and answers questions with regard to subdivisions, site plans, and sign regulations.  Assists and meets with citizens and landowners in discussion of all plan elements.  Advises owners, developers, and consultants of procedures, principles, solutions and alternatives for development and provides assistance on applicable County regulations.  Reviews preliminary and final plats and site plans for accuracy, completeness and compliance and recommends site plan approval to Development Coordinator and County Engineer.  Prepares letters and memos to applicants with regard to plats and site plans.  Receives bonds, assurances, disclosure statements, and payment certificates for plats and site plans and coordinates with administrative staff for review and filing.  Consults with other departments and agencies and obtains signatures and releases for plats and site plans.  Works with administrative staff to ensure plats are administratively complete; technically approves plats for signature by County Engineer, approval by Commissioners Court, and recordation by County Clerk.  Contributes to quarterly County status reports.  Prepares proposed revisions and amendments to County regulations.  Contributes updates to County Major Thoroughfare plan.  Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers. 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma/GED; Four years experience in related engineering, construction or material testing field.  Good computer and mathematical skills; good verbal and written communication and organizational skills; good interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with the public, other employees and elected officials.  Ability to read and understand construction plans, topography and geotechnical information surface forms, recognize soil classification and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.  Ability to understand civil engineering technology.  The physical requirements for this position require being able to traverse over uneven terrain, able to endure heat and cold temperatures, and walk long distances on hard surfaces.    

 

SALARY RANGE: Administrative/Clerical Grade 10, $1,513.60 - $1,780.80 biweekly based on qualifications
