Description
Under general direction of the Lead AMI Technician, the AMI Technician performs installation, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electric metering equipment and perform other field-related metering services in accordance with departmental procedures, processes and established safety protocols.
 Principal Duties:
AMI METER TECHNICIAN I
This is the entry level class for the AMI Meter Technician position. Incumbents work under close supervision and are trained to perform basic aspects of service/maintenance metering duties.
 
Principal Job Duties
  1. Responsible for the safe, timely and accurate completion of field services duties, to include, but not limited to, providing field metering services for self-contained AMI electric meters and first/final reads for water meters and assisting with meter testing.
  2. Provide skilled installation, trouble-shooting, and maintenance of AMI meters.
  3. Investigate unusual or abnormal electric and water meter readings and customer complaints; re-read meters as necessary; identify and report meter discrepancies or malfunctions.
  4. Inspect meters for damage, defects, and unauthorized connections and report irregularities to AMI Meter Technician – Lead.
  5. Identify and report meter tampering and theft of service.
  6. Assist in reading commercial electric and water meters and record readings, as needed.
  7. Follow safety protocols, procedures and processes as identified in the departmental safety manual.
  8. Interact with internal City of College Station departments and customers in the field, as required.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

AMI METER TECHNICIAN II
This classification is distinguished from the AMI Meter Technician I in that the AMI Meter Technician II works independently providing skilled service/maintenance field metering services and works under limited and/or moderate supervision. 
 
The AMI Meter Technician II performs all duties of the AMI Meter Technician I, in addition to performing more complex skilled maintenance and repair duties such as those listed below.
 
Principal Job Duties
  1. Identify, investigate, document and follow through on meter tampering and theft of service.
  2. Provide skilled installation, trouble-shooting, maintenance, testing, calibration and repair of AMI meters.
  3. Perform as a backup for the Lead AMI Meter Technician position during their absence, as requested and/or as assigned.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned.
 Qualifications:
AMI Technician I
Required:   
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Valid Texas Driver License. Ability to work stand-by/on-call rotation and reside within a 40-minute response time within six (6) months of hire date. Ability to work around insects, reptiles and animals that are encountered along route or entering property. Ability to endure extended periods of walking, standing and stooping in a variety of weather conditions and extreme temperatures. Ability to lift or push heavy objects.

Preferred: 
Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience performing general labor duties.

AMI Technician II
*Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications of the AMI Meter Technician I in addition to the following:

Required:    
Two (2) or more years of progressive electric metering field services experience; and Successful completion of the SWEMA Introduction to Electrical Metering (Course 1), or the equivalent combination of experience and technical training related to area of assignment. Experience in reading water and electric meters, and general meter maintenance.

Preferred:    
Ability to read and interpret electric and water system maps.
