Job Summary

Incumbents perform inspections of residential and/or commercial buildings, materials and/or other applicable areas to ensure compliance with all local, state and/or federal regulations related to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, signs, landscaping, concrete work, pools, and parking requirements. Responsibilities may include: reviewing construction plan documents; conducting field inspections of applicable structures and/or materials and identifying violations; identifying code compliance issues and offenses; preparing reports; enforcing applicable codes, laws and regulations; attending meetings; maintaining applicable databases; and/or, performing other related activities. 

Typical Essential Duties

• Conducts field inspections of applicable structures and/or materials; reviews construction plan documents; identifies violations and code compliance issues and offenses; and enforces applicable codes, laws, and regulations.
• Coordinates with internal and/or external departments, personnel, and agencies, including the public and contractors; attends meetings to facilitate department operations; work may involve providing technical and general information and assistance to the public, contractors, and relevant stakeholders; and addresses and resolves complaints.
• Prepares, maintains, compiles, and/or updates reports, records, files, and other documentation; and maintains and/or updates applicable databases and systems to ensure timely and accurate documentation.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Training and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.  Must possess the State of Texas Plumbing Inspector’s License or have the ability to obtain such license within one year of hire date.  Knowledge of current building codes required.  Valid Texas driver’s license and good driving record required.

Physical Requirements

• Positions in this class typically require: climbing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

• Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions, such as, mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibrations; atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation; extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; work space-related movement restrictions; intense noise; and other environmental conditions, such as, challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environments; incumbents may also be expected to travel.
