JOB TITLE:  CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER

DEPARTMENT: MEDICAL EXAMINER

SALARY RANGE:  Professional/Management Grade 19,

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Responsible for performing examinations and autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death.  Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department.  Plans and coordinates the activities of the Medical Examiner’s Office.  Performs examinations and autopsies and prepares reports on findings.  Analyzes and interprets data obtained from investigations to determine cause of death.  Testifies in court proceedings as an expert medical witness.  Signs off on official documents.  Photographs wounds and other physical evidence.  Provides medical information to law enforcement agencies, prosecution agencies and the general public.  Performs related duties as required.  Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

License to practice medicine in the State of Texas.  Ten years Medical Examiner experience.  Knowledge of state and federal laws regarding the performance and reporting of autopsies.  Knowledge of forensic external examinations, autopsies and medical/dental examination and identification procedures.  Comprehensive knowledge of trauma mechanisms and considerable knowledge of natural diseases.  Considerable knowledge of toxicology, serology and DNA analysis.  Knowledge of budget preparation and administration, and the ability to supervise medical personnel.  Ability to present medical findings in court proceedings.  Ability to communicate effectively with hostile, abusive or irrational individuals.  Ability to operate autopsy equipment.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, county employees, department heads/elected officials, the news media and the general public.  Valid Texas Medical License, American Board of Pathology Certification in Anatomical and Forensic Pathology.  On call 24-hours a day.
