Under general supervision of the Logistics Division Chief, this position will be responsible for the configuration, implementation, and maintenance of various software, hardware, and technology managed by the Fire Department. The IT Specialist will provide primary support for a variety of Public Safety Information Technology systems to include the network, servers, phones, desktops, laptops, mobile radios, along with various other hardware and software. Performs work associated with the installation, repair, and maintenance of various electronic equipment and devices. Performs other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Shifts are typically during normal business hours, consisting of eight (8) hours or ten (10) hours in length with actual hours being established by operational necessity.
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Must be able to work beyond the normally assigned shift when necessary.
  • Will be subject to call back when necessary.
  • Troubleshoot networks, systems, and applications to identify and correct operational difficulties.
  • Install, configure, and maintain personal computers, workstations, file servers, Ethernet networks, and other related equipment, devices, and systems.
  • Performs and/or oversees software and application development, installation, and administration; maintain site licenses for department/organization.
  • Supports, monitors, tests, and troubleshoots computer hardware and software.
  • Assist with testing and troubleshooting of public safety radio system hardware and software for the fire department.
  • Prioritize and process IT work orders received from departmental employees.
  • Develop and coordinate ongoing training for new and updated software and hardware packages.
  • Ensure compliance with CJIS, HIPAA, and other security standards to protect data in police, fire, and other public safety environments.
  • Provide technical support to Public Safety users.
  • Assists with purchasing of equipment and preparation of specifications for proposals.
  • Provide input and work as a project team leader or member on technology-based projects.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of computer and network design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft architecture and technology.
  • Knowledge of tools relevant to the Microsoft platforms including monitoring, diagnosis, problem identification and resolution.
  • Expertise in PC hardware, server hardware, and Windows operating systems.
  • Knowledge of current IT Security standards and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse employee groups.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop professional end user and operations documentation.
  • Ability to multitask across multiple concurrent projects utilizing time management processes.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage time allocated for tasks.
  • Ability and interest in continual education and professional development of personal IT skills and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulations.
  • Knowledge in encryption and security protocols.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and resolving issues with communications equipment.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and use good judgment.
  • Ability to perform duties in high stress emergency situations.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Information Technology or a closely related field OR any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
  • This position supports Public Safety computer systems, and the candidate must successfully pass a criminal background check.

DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience providing technology customer support in public safety.
  • Working knowledge of a Motorola 800 MHz Trunked Radio system.
  • Previous experience with UKG Workforce Telestaff, ESO, Operative IQ, and Vector Solutions is desired.
  • Knowledge of Motorola Network Management software.
  • Knowledge of mobile data systems.
  • Basic knowledge of principles, practices and tools used in project management.
  • Additional training or experience in a related field.

 

 

Working Conditions

  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or throughout the building to access other worksites and equipment.
  • Routinely operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as desktops, laptops, servers, copy machines, and printers.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Constantly positions oneself to install software, hardware, and maintain servers and systems. Light to moderate lifting may be required.
  • Working in an office environment with moderate noise levels from equipment and conversations. The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Collaborating with team members in person and virtually through video conferencing and other communication tools.
  • Occasionally working in confined spaces in emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire apparatus in order to install necessary radio equipment or to diagnose and repair other faults, despite weather conditions.
  • Remaining focused and productive in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
  • Accommodating individuals with diverse abilities and ensuring accessibility of technology and workspaces.
  • Following ergonomic guidelines to promote comfort and prevent strain or injury while working at a computer workstation.
