The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking a summer Intern to support the team that develops recommendations for transportation funding in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) region and aids in the implementation of selected projects and programs. At NCTCOG, this individual will be part of an innovative and award-winning Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) that serves the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States. Tasks will generally include entering data, conducting funding analyses, researching project histories, implementing action plans, and aiding the team manager with implementation of tasks that further team priorities. Ideal candidates should live within the Dallas-Fort Worth region and be able to work at least 25 hours a week from approximately mid-May to mid-August 2024. Continuing employment opportunities may be available for Interns who are successful in this position.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Entering data accurately and maintaining data quality/integrity
  • Researching project histories and providing analysis to team members and/or regional partners
  • Assisting with project tracking efforts to ensure the timely implementation of transportation projects
  • Scheduling meetings, developing agendas, and preparing handouts
  • Assisting in the administration of State, federal, and regional transportation funding programs
  • Drafting, for supervisor review, correspondence, documentation, project listings, and reports for numerous audiences, including transportation partners, local governments, elected officials, and the public
  • Performing analysis on project listings
  • Drafting, for supervisor review, presentations for staff and committee members

Required Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving ability and critical-thinking skills
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with other team members, and present ideas
  • Proficient at collecting, sorting, compiling, and accurately entering data for analysis
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to write letters, memos, and email correspondence, as well as professional reports

Required Education and Experience

  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment, such as business, public administration, public policy, government, urban/transportation planning, finance, accounting, or related field.
  • No work experience required

Starting Salary

Minimum of $16.00 per hour

The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.  NCTCOG also serves as a designated recipient for Federal Transit Administration funds.
