Summary Of Duties

A Firefighter/Paramedic serves as a dual-role member of the department, encompassing advanced emergency medical care responsibilities in addition to firefighting duties. Depending on the nature of the emergency, these personnel may provide basic and advanced life support, conduct extrication and rescue operations, or engage in firefighting and hazard control activities.

This position requires technical expertise and the ability to interact with patients, independently assess and treat medical emergencies, follow established advanced treatment protocols, supervise patient care, and document findings for medical records. Work is often carried out under stressful conditions and may involve exposure to contagious diseases, environmental hazards, chemicals, or physical violence.

WORK PERFORMED (in addition to firefighting duties)
In addition to firefighting duties, a Firefighter/Paramedic:

1. Provides basic and advanced life support to individuals at emergency scenes or during transport to medical facilities.

2. Administers emergency medical care, including hemorrhage control, intravenous therapy, medication administration, electrocardiogram interpretation, defibrillation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management, and fracture stabilization.

3. Records essential patient information, treatment details, vital signs, and scene observations.

4. Follows established medical protocols and communicates patient information to physicians.

5. Maintains daily response logs and equipment inventories.

6. Operates emergency vehicles during responses and patient transport to hospitals.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS (in addition to those of a Firefighter)
In addition to the qualifications of a Firefighter, a Firefighter/Paramedic possesses:

1. Training in advanced emergency medical procedures.

2. Proficiency in patient assessment techniques.

3. Knowledge of symptoms of medical emergencies and appropriate responses.

4. The ability to evaluate patient conditions and administer emergency medical care, including the use of emergency medications.

5. Skill in operating emergency vehicles.

6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective communication with medical directors, superiors, colleagues, and the public.

7. The ability to respond promptly and efficiently in emergency situations.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a standard senior high school or technical school program and successful completion of a basic emergency medical technician course. Paramedics must hold a license or certification obtained through specialized coursework in advanced prehospital emergency medicine, following recognized agency standards that adhere to the Department of Transportation EMS Curricula as a minimum scope of education
