Description

This position is responsible for maintaining all City facilities, buildings, and roadways by performing routine and extensive preventative maintenance and repair procedures.
 
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience in building and roadway maintenance
  • Technical training in carpentry and basic Electrical experience
  • HVAC Certification
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license  

Major Duties: 

  • Troubleshoots minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement
  • Performs routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assists in repairing ballasts and light fixtures
  • Performs routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks, or urinals
  • Maintains mowing, trimming, and pruning of all City-right-of-ways’ properties and buildings
  • Repairs and replaces door knobs or locks and repairs closures and patch holes in walls
  • Performs preventative building maintenance duties, caulks windows and doors, repairs and replaces broken windows
  • Fixes water leaks and water fountains
  • Purchases supplies, equipment, and materials necessary to complete projects
  • Assembles and moves furniture and hangs pictures, bulletin boards, flags, banners, etc.
  • Paints interior and exterior walls
  • Constructs, arranges, and moves furniture and equipment when needed
  • Patches pot holes and perform other tasks in repairing streets; and maintains sidewalks
  • Erects and maintains city street signs and traffic control signs
  • Operates assigned equipment in the maintenance and repair of city roads, streets, and drainage systems including gasoline and diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment, light to medium duty trucks, tractors, wood chippers, backhoe and various machines, tools, and powered equipment
  • Cuts trees & bushes including trim/cut limbs, pruning when needed
  • Debris / Trash pickup from the streets and cleans storm drains
  • Manages Community Service Workers, Inmate Laborers, and/or volunteers when needed
  • Completes small construction projects when needed
  • Provides set-up and break-down services for meetings, activities, and special events
  • Performs other related duties as assigned 

Knowledge Required by the Position:

  • Knowledge of basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of the practices and techniques of  lawn care, sprinkler system operations, and traffic control
  • Knowledge in operating farm tractors for lawn maintenance
  • Knowledge in operating a variety of mechanized garden and landscaping power tools, machinery and equipment; tools such as weed eaters, trimmers, edger, chain saw, pole saw, zero radius mower, and wood chipper
  • Knowledge in pulling, backing up, and parking a trailer
  • Knowledge of building maintenance requirements and procedures
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to position
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn standard cleaning methods and equipment used in custodial work such as brooms, mops, dust mops, vacuums, scouring devices, etc. 

Ability Required by the Position:

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required; on-call availability for emergencies
  • Ability to follow established safety rules, departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis
  • Ability to exert continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulating and heavy lifting of equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret design drawings, construction and building specifications
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with general public in sometimes difficult and trying circumstances (Customer Service)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the general public
  • Ability to work accurately with detailed records and complex information
  • Ability to work independently

Supervisory Controls:  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director, General Services and Facility Management.

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, rain gear, or gloves.

Work Environment:  
The work is typically performed outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather.
